WebSentinel Users Guide

Troubleshooting

Installation Troubles
I've installed WebSentinel as described in the documentation, but it isn't allowing me to enter a secure realm even when using the correct username and password as defined in WebSentinel Admin. Why?

If you are certain you have installed WebSentinel properly and are experiencing this problem the most likely cause is that your web server is trying to handle the realm and is not allowing WebSentinel to do its job. If there are realms defined within your web server itself, it will try to protect those realms without using WebSentinel at all. Once you have defined all of your realms within WebSentinel Admin, you must remove them from your web server so WebSentinel can handle the security. To see how to do this with WebSTAR, please see the Migrating from WebSTAR chapter.

I'm trying to install WebSentinel on a single machine that has two servers on different ports that share the same security structure but am running into troubles. How can I make this work?

If you are running two different web servers, they will both need seperate Plug-ins folders, and thus two seperate copies of the WebSentinel Plug-in. Normally under this setup, each copy of the WebSentinel Plug-in would have it's own WebSentinel Data folder (located next to the plug-in in the web server's Plug-ins folder), which holds settings and user databases. In order for the settings to be shared across both copies of the WebSentinel Plug-in, you will need to create an alias of the WebSentinel Settings file from your first server (located in the WebSentinel Data folder), and move the alias into the WebSentinel Data folder on the other folder (renaming the alias back to "WebSentinel Settings", not "WebSentinel Settings alias"). Do not alias the WebSentinel Data folder itself, or any of the other databases. Also, none of the other WebSentinel support files (such as the WebSentinel Setup and WebSentinel Gateway application) need to be in the second WebSentinel Data folder. Note that this technique also works for a normal web server and an SSL web server that need to share the same security structure.

After installation, you two web server's should look similar to the following:

  • Web Server 1
    • Plug-ins
      • WebSentinel Plug-in
      • WebSentinel Data
        • WebSentinel Settings
        • Users.db
        • Groups.db
        • WebSentinel Setup
        • WebSentinel Gateway
  • Web Server 2
    • Plug-ins
      • WebSentinel Plug-in
      • WebSentinel Data
        • WebSentinel Settings

WebSentinel Admin
When I try to connect to my server there is no listing for "WebSentinel Gateway".

The WebSentinel Gateway is a background-only application that is launched or quit based on the WebSentinel Setup control panel. Make sure that the WebSentinel Setup control panel is configured to allow remote administration in order to connect to the gateway. Further information on connecting to your server may be found in the Introduction to WebSentinel chapter.
Other Troubles
I'm running into memory errors after importing a large number of users into WebSentinel. How do I increase the memory available?

The WebSentinel Gateway background-only application needs to have its memory allocation increased. First, turn off remote administration using the WebSentinel Setup control panel on your web server. Then, select the WebSentinel Gateway application (you'll find it in WebSentinel's data folder within your web server's plug-in folder) and choose "Get Info" from the File menu and increase the preferred size by 500k or more. Its also a good idea to increase your web server's memory allocation as your site's plug-in load increases.

I'm using WebSentinel with virtual domain hosting software and it doesn't seem to be working correctly. Am I doing something wrong?

This is most likely a very easy problem for you to fix. WebSTAR-style plug-ins are loaded in a specific order, like extension files in your system folder. It is important that WebSentinel is the first plug-in to load on your server in order to work correctly with virtual domain hosting software. The simple solution is to name the WebSentinel plug-in with a space preceeding the name, like " WebSentinel plug-in".
